Savoring Over Striving Hey Friends! Despite the fall and halloween decorations popping up all over my neighborhood, mid-September in Iowa is still bringing the summer heat with temps hovering around 90 degrees the last few days. The latest heat wave has me soaking up every last minute of the summer. I love all that autumn has to bring: crunchy leaves, warm soups, cozy beverages, and the natural slowing down that comes with the shortening days. In the past, I have jumped into fall season the minute the first leaf fell or when marketers started selling their fall products. I would dig out my sweaters and start putting cinnamon in everything. This forceful and abrupt jump into the autumn season always seemed to leave me feeling disenchanted. I would feel too hot and sticky in my sweaters, and the cinnamon latte I held in my hand just wouldn't hit the spot quite like I had hoped. Isn't this so true of life as well? So often I find myself striving toward the next season without any regard for where I am at right in this moment. I have jumped ten steps ahead leaving myself feeling frustrated and burnt out when my current reality doesn't fit the season I want so desperately to embrace. Instead of striving, I am choosing to savor. A couple weeks ago, we had a bit of a cold snap with lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s. During those days, it felt very natural and comforting to begin to savor some of the experiences of fall. Now that we're back to 90 degrees, I am switching my afternoon beverage from hot cocoa back to some watermelon electrolyte juice. Whether it's the sweltering days of late summer or the season of life in which God has placed me; I am learning to ease into even the smallest transitions in life, letting them make way for what is coming next. The transformations in our own lives are also slow, subtle, and non-linear at times. We may take one step forward and three steps back, and that is okay. Nature isn't concerned that the temperatures are swinging back and forth between seasons. It simply receives the shifts and takes them all in stride, knowing the next season will come in its due time. As I have intentionally slowed down the pace of life the last few years, I am learning to sow seeds of gratitude for the gentle shifts of the changing seasons. Even if that means continuing to savor the season that is still right in front of me. You can check out the strategies I use to make leaning into my current season that much easier in my latest posts! Whatever season you find yourself in, I encourage you receive it with open arms. Start by sowing seeds of contentment where you are right now. It is exactly where you are meant to be. Lots of love until next time, -Kayla |
I am passionate about helping people limit toxins, cook from scratch, and live regeneratively by simplifying their lives to make room to do your most impactful work.
Intentionality. That is what slow, simple living is all about. I am in regular need of this reminder. The world around us is constantly trying to sell us what to do and how to live our lives. "Avoid this toxic chemical here, exercise this way, eat only these types of foods, or are you really a minimalist if you have that?" When the never ending stream of information is coming in, it becomes so easy to forget that slow living is not about rigidity. It is about intentionality. Intentionality...
The New Year is upon us and whether you are still going strong with your New Year's resolutions or have fallen away from them, there is no guilt here. Guilt and shame are a constant battle. In a world filled with "do more", "be more", and "buy more"; it is so easy to fall into the trap of comparison leading to guilt and shame. I have often found the exact opposite to be true. More of everything mostly just leads more to manage not more happiness. What God really wants you to know, is that you...
As the year is coming to a close, it is natural to begin thinking about a time of transition. The New Year doesn't have to be a time to completely overhaul your life (although it can be), but rather a time to continue to honor the a time for natural shifts and transitions. Maybe you are already in a great flow, and you are focused on holding steady into 2026; or maybe it is time for a gentle shift. Both can be good. The most important thing is that you are paying attention. Attentiveness...
