Intentionality. That is what slow, simple living is all about. I am in regular need of this reminder. The world around us is constantly trying to sell us what to do and how to live our lives. "Avoid this toxic chemical here, exercise this way, eat only these types of foods, or are you really a minimalist if you have that?" When the never ending stream of information is coming in, it becomes so easy to forget that slow living is not about rigidity. It is about intentionality. Intentionality looks like picking and choosing what lifestyle changes are a priority for you rather than being perfect. What does that look like in relation to minimalism, slow food, and non-toxic living? These three simple living trends are just a few methods of stripping away that which all the excess in order to reveal those things which truly enhance and add value to your life. Stripping away hyper-palatable food to rediscover the bold flavors of carefully grown meats, dairy, and produce. Stripping away the excess cleaning products for one or two non-toxic ones that work for everything. Stripping away the constant noise of the television, social media, and podcasts to add back in movies or shows you actually enjoy and content creators you actually learn from. The whole idea behind living simpler is to discover what brings the most joy, peace, love, and wholeness in your life. Let me give you an example. About a year ago, we decided we were tired of watching so much TV in the evenings, so we moved our TV to our spare bedroom. We didn't put any rules or restrictions on watching it, but we found that having it in another room added the friction needed to rediscover alternative ways to spend our evenings. While we still enjoy watching sporting events and the occasional movie or show, we often go long stretches without turning on the television. In fact, I don't think we've turned it on in two weeks. We now fill our evenings with reading books, cooking, working on house projects, playing with our dog, or just sitting and talking. All of which have brought so much more value to our life, even those nights when we do turn on the TV. So let this be your gentle reminder to search for the simple living trends that add the most value to your life in your given situation, and to choose intentionality over rigidity. The New Year is upon us and whether you are still going strong with your New Year's resolutions or have fallen away from them, there is no guilt here. Guilt and shame are a constant battle. In a world filled with "do more", "be more", and "buy more"; it is so easy to fall into the trap of comparison leading to guilt and shame. I have often found the exact opposite to be true. More of everything mostly just leads more to manage not more happiness. What God really wants you to know, is that you...
As the year is coming to a close, it is natural to begin thinking about a time of transition. The New Year doesn't have to be a time to completely overhaul your life (although it can be), but rather a time to continue to honor the a time for natural shifts and transitions. Maybe you are already in a great flow, and you are focused on holding steady into 2026; or maybe it is time for a gentle shift. Both can be good. The most important thing is that you are paying attention. Attentiveness...
The need to perform is in hyperdrive at this time of year. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, followed by Christmas and New Years, there are several events to plan and prepare for. With those events comes the pressure to have a squeaky clean and well-decorated home, to put elaborate meals on the table, to wear the trendiest seasonal outfits, and to host or show up and a party with dignity and importance. While some of these things are good and even enjoyable at times, stress creeps in...
