A Season For Slowing

Hi Friends,

October and autumn are well underway and the leaves are just beginning to change color here in Iowa!

Autumn is a wonderful time. The vibrant colors of the changing foliage, the crunchy leaves beneath your feet, the warmth of the summer sun mixed with the a gentle brisk breeze, and the warming flavors of apples and squash mixed with cinnamon and spice.

So many things to enjoy!

Yet, if we don't slow down, how quickly we can miss the abundance around us.

October was always one of my favorite months growing up. Not only for the reasons listed above but also because it was a season for slowing, appreciation, and an opportunity for a deep, life-giving breath.

After the long summer days filled with activity on our family farm and the start of school, October was the time in which we had settled into the rhythms of fall but not yet gearing up for the holiday season.

October was a time felt grounding, a chance to be present in the moment. Even in our busy modern world, people still express a deep appreciation for this season.

Autumn is a time that demands us to stop what we're doing, even if just for a minute, and take in the beauty around us.

Leaves only hold their golden hues for a few short days or weeks if we're lucky. It won't be long until the last bits of warmth gives way to a bone-chilling winter freeze (at least for those of us lucky enough to live in a place with snowy winters 😀)

While we will have to wait another year to experience the wonders of fall, we fortunately don't have to wait a year to take advantage of the opportunity to slow down and savor.

That opportunity is with us every day, all year long.

That is my encouragement to you today. Take a moment or several to take hold of and savor not only this season but also life around you by....

  • indulging in the abundant cozy flavors of apple, cinnamon, pumpkin, and squash
  • snuggle up under a soft blanket by the fire with with someone you love
  • take a walk or drive through the vibrant trees while they hold their color

Intentionality. That is what slow, simple living is all about. I am in regular need of this reminder. The world around us is constantly trying to sell us what to do and how to live our lives. "Avoid this toxic chemical here, exercise this way, eat only these types of foods, or are you really a minimalist if you have that?" When the never ending stream of information is coming in, it becomes so easy to forget that slow living is not about rigidity. It is about intentionality. Intentionality...

The New Year is upon us and whether you are still going strong with your New Year's resolutions or have fallen away from them, there is no guilt here. Guilt and shame are a constant battle. In a world filled with "do more", "be more", and "buy more"; it is so easy to fall into the trap of comparison leading to guilt and shame. I have often found the exact opposite to be true. More of everything mostly just leads more to manage not more happiness. What God really wants you to know, is that you...

As the year is coming to a close, it is natural to begin thinking about a time of transition. The New Year doesn't have to be a time to completely overhaul your life (although it can be), but rather a time to continue to honor the a time for natural shifts and transitions. Maybe you are already in a great flow, and you are focused on holding steady into 2026; or maybe it is time for a gentle shift. Both can be good. The most important thing is that you are paying attention. Attentiveness...
